Poutine Trail

Lobster Poutine is obviously our favorite type of poutine. But sometimes we crave poutine with smoked meats, or sautéed vegetables, or the classic: cheese, gravy, and frites.

When these cravings hit, any old poutine won’t do. We still want the very best of whatever type of poutine we desire. And we are sure you are no different. So, through exhaustive research, we are proud to offer you the ten best poutines from the two greatest poutine cities on earth: Montreal and Quebec.

Quebec City

  1. Casse-croûte Pierrot

If you are craving some late-night poutine, this 24-hour spot has you covered. Pierrot is a small neighborhood eatery that stands out with their small and melty cheese curds, dark, savory beef sauce, and deliciously caramelized fries.

  1. Chez Gaston

Unquestionably one of the city’s best no frills, greasy spoons. Grab a seat at the bar and watch the cooks add heaps of griddled sausage, onions, as well as tons of other mouthwatering toppings to your poutine.

  1. Fromagerie des Grondines & ses amis

This is a great local deli in Saint-Roch that sells an assortment of local products, as well as sandwichs, salads, and poutine. The company also has a cheese producing facility in Portneuf. The poutine from the deli is delicious: Their Deschambault cheese is rich and creamy, the potatoes are local and perfectly crisped, and the homemade chicken and veal gravy is heavenly.

  1. Poutineville

This restaurant has locations in a few different cities, but as they have grown, their poutine quality has never suffered. They have a wide range of interesting topping combinations to choose from. You can also add your own mix of toppings to create a total unique poutine. If you feel like testing out Canada’s top-notch healthcare system, try the 15-pound “Heart Attack” plate, by far the largest poutine dish in town.

  1. Chez Ashton

We couldn’t write about the best poutine in Quebec without mentioning this iconic establishment.  This is the most popular poutine stop in the city and rightly so. The poutine is near perfect and a must visit.

Montreal

  1. Blackstrap BBQ

This spot is most notable, of course, for its amazing barbecue, but the restaurants bunt ends poutine has poutine-lovers in a tizzy.

  1. Pierrette Patates

Stalwarts in the growing poutine crave, this blue collar, corner shop has been making poutine their way for years. Unimpressed by the complexities and shenanigans many are trying to incorporate into their poutine, Pierrette Patates believes you only need three things to make great poutine: Thick, golden fries, large, squeaky cheese curds, and piping hot, rich gravy.

  1. Restaurant A.A.

This is the perfect place in Montreal to get your greasy dive poutine fix. The curds are sumptuous and squeaky, and the gravy recipe is a closely guarded family secret that takes hours to prepare.

  1. Ma Poule Mouillée

Advertised as a Portuguese roast chicken restaurant, this spot has developed an impressive following for its poutine. Topped with chicken, chorizo, and special house sauce, this is a variation on poutine you won’t want to miss. Fair warning, even the “small” portion is gigantic, so bring an empty stomach.

  1. Garde Manger

We couldn’t make it through this list without mentioning lobster poutine at least once. The restaurant is owned by chef and television personality, Chuck Hughes, the man who arguably put lobster poutine on the map. If you need lobster poutine while in Montreal Chuck is the man to see.
