The lobster industry is a mainstay of Northern New England. It is highly sustainable through years of regulation and planning. But it is also threatened by climate change. Populations of lobster are booming today because of more access to food, but it is also migrating north. So, just as the heart of the lobster population moved from Massachusetts to Maine in the 80s, soon it will be in Canadian waters.

LOBSTER

Cold, cold water leads to sweet, sweet lobster. In Maine you’ll hear the distant hum of lobster boats hauling in traps year-round; the lobster fishing never really stops, and neither does the eating, even though most lobsters are caught between late June and late December. Every year, though, the population of lobsters migrate farther north searching for colder climes. This illustration shows the change of the lobster population location over decades.
